2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

After receiving the invitation to drive the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL V-8 variants, we immediately began talking about the big coupes in terms of a comparison test. But we ran into a significant issue: There’s nothing to compare a CL against. In practice, the CL is little more than a two-door S-Class, making it the equivalent of a BMW 7 Series Coupe, or a two-door Audi A8. Trouble is, those last two cars don’t exist.
What about at the other end of the spectrum? You could argue that the Maserati GranTurismo is little more than a Duoporte, though the two-door Maser is much lighter than the big Merc and much more focused on sport than heartbeat-slowing luxury. There’s also the 612 Scaglietti, the four-seat Ferarri, though these days they’re rarer than unicorns, especially when it comes to press fleets. The most logical choice, then, is the upcoming second-generation Bentley Continental GT. Emphasis on upcoming.
For the moment, it seems the CL is without competitive peer. The question then becomes: Does the CL matter? When a car occupies such a unique niche in the market place, pointing out the highs and lows becomes moot, because interested customers will buy them anyhow. After all, where’s the competition? By the by, Mercedes-Benz claims that the demographic buying its biggest coupe is about as special as the car: men between the ages of 50 to 60 who earn between $600,000 and a million bucks a year. Thanks to FOX News, this is now called the Juan Williams demographic.
I’m going to argue that the CL is an important story to tell for a couple of reasons. One is that big Mercedes coupes represent Reaganomics at work. The high-dollar, cutting-edge technology that the aforementioned rich dudes pay through the nose for eventually trickles down to the rest of the three-pointed star lineup. In some cases, all cars everywhere benefit. Take electronic stability control. First introduced in the 1995 S600, it’s now a federally mandated safety item. Another reason for CL relevancy is that the new V-8 engines found in the CL550 4MATIC and CL63 AMG will make their way down to lesser (or at least less expensive) Benzes. In fact, the S63 already features the new motor. Then, of course, there’s my favorite reason: The B-pillarless CL is just a magnificent automobile.

2012 Mercedes Benz CLS63 AMG

2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-front-three-quartersMercedes gave up building mere automobiles a long time ago. The current obsession is building ground-bound rolling rockets like its latest offering, the 2012 CLS63 AMG. Not only does it have the thrust to reach orbit, but also the looks to impress any advanced civilization.
The original CLS defined the modern 4-door coupe concept with its release in 2004. The 2012 CLS63 sharpens the aesthetics but is more of an evolution of the same design, with most improvements under the skin. The design team at AMG focused on efficiency as much as performance improvement, but when we are talking about Mercedes, more power always seems to creep in. The CLS63, which was powered by an almost appropriately sized 6.2-liter V8, is now powered by a completely non sequitur 5.5-liter direct injection twin turbo V8. The M157 engine is actually 33 percent more fuel efficient than the previous unit while producing an extra 43 hp and 85 lb-ft of torque, bringing numbers up to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft with the optional Performance Package. With those kinds of numbers Mercedes could call it the CLSuzan and no one would care.
2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-rear2012-mercedes-benz-CLS63-AMG-cockpit
Leaning away from the industry trend of dual-clutch transmissions, AMG has chosen the Speedshift MCT seven-speed unit first used on the SL63. It replaces a traditional torque convertor with an electronically controlled wet clutch. The transmission has four modes of operation: Sport, Sport+, Manual, and Controlled Efficiency. In Sport+, Race Start function provides launch control. Controlled Efficiency employs a start/stop function to increase fuel mileage.
The CLS63′s suspension has been updated to match the new power output. The steering system now utilizes a variable assist feature that not only increases steering response and comfort, but also increases efficiency by only operating at the level needed. Adjustable ride height and variable damping allow the driver to select from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes at the touch of a button. All of these options add up to a car that can be tailored to the driver’s taste and needs.

PRIOR Design Pumps Up the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

PRIOR Design Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe front 3/4 view

With the demise of Mercedes-Benz’s CLK-Class range in favor of a resurrected E-Class coupe and convertible, many motoring enthusiasts (us included) are eager to know when two-door versions of the wunderbar E63 AMG will be showing up in showrooms (or if they’re even coming down the pike at all). After all, not everyone who is in the market for such a vehicle wants the added heft (or cost) of the full-size CL63 AMG, nor do all people buy into a notion that a coupe can have more than one door per side, commercial success and critical acclaim of the CLS family be damned.

Thankfully, there’s no shortage of tuners willing to fill this hole in the AMG lineup. Some focus more on making the new E coupe’s already tasty lines (though the tiny fixed rear-quarter windows on what’s otherwise a proper “pillarless” hardtop like big sister CL still bug us) more distinctive, while some put more emphasis on performance. The new package from the folks at PRIOR Design lies somewhere in between those two extremes.
